Preparation is Key

Your Safety Depends on It

Your safety is our top priority, and we want to ensure you have a fun, memorable, and secure ice fishing experience. Please review the following safety guidelines to prepare for Alberta’s harsh winter conditions and the unique challenges of ice fishing on Slave Lake.

Extreme Weather

Alberta winters can bring extreme cold, with temperatures reaching -50°C with wind chill.

Here’s how to prepare:

Dress Appropriately: Wear insulated, waterproof boots, ice cleats, thermal layers, windproof outerwear, and warm hats and gloves. Avoid sneakers or inadequate footwear.

Bring Emergency Supplies: Pack extra blankets, hand warmers, and a first-aid kit.

Monitor Weather Conditions: Always check the forecast for whiteout conditions, snowstorms, or temperature drops before heading out.

Vehicle Safety

Driving on ice demands caution and thorough preparation.

Here’s how to prepare:

Please check in with us shortly before your stay for trail conditions & truck access.

Shovels Required: Always bring a heavy-duty shovel. Snowdrifts can form overnight, trapping vehicles.

Road Conditions Can Change: Even if conditions seem safe on arrival, they can worsen quickly. Snowdrifts several feet high are common.

Ice & Lake Safety

Ice and lake safety require vigilance.

Here’s how to prepare:

Understand Ice Thickness: Ensure the ice is at least 12 inches thick for vehicles. Ice conditions can vary, so stay within marked areas.

Stay Clear of Open Water: Avoid areas with cracks, pressure ridges, or open water.

Bring Ice Safety Gear: Carry ice picks, ice cleats, a rope, and a whistle in case of emergencies.
